John took over the Chair of The-Pensions-Net-Work in March 2010.
A graduate and non-practicing actuary he has worked in the pensions industry for nearly 40years and during that time has been involved with the full range of pension schemes –both self administered and insured.
He started work at Axa/Sun Life where he was one of those involved in the early days of SSASs. This partly explains his passion for SIPPs - he is often referred to as “Mr SIPP” having spent much of his working life since 1990 promoting the advantages of SIPPs. He was the inaugural chairman of the SIPP Provider Group – now known as AMPS - and has worked closely with Government and regulators on a range of issues. He helped shape the income drawdown regime introduced in 1995.
He has spent a large part of his career enjoyably working in the intermediary market on behalf of a number of pension providers. In 2004, following a stint of more than four years as Managing Director/Executive Chairman of PPML he joined Suffolk Life where he continues to be a Board Director with responsibility for external affairs and media activity.
John is a frequent contributor to a wide range of pensions journals and other trade magazines and is a sought after chair and speaker at industry conferences and seminars. In the future he hopes to see some evidence of a genuine political commitment to sorting out the chaos that currently exists across state, public and private sector pensions having been the first to propose the establishment of an independent pensions authority. He takes a growing interest in the issues related to longevity and retirement planning – not least because he is getting closer to becoming an active participant!
He is married with two grown-up children and lives on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border. He is a golfing disaster, a Crystal Palace season ticket holder and a tennis fanatic. In 2005 he achieved one of his lifetime ambitions by playing at Wimbledon. He is a non-executive director of the Salisbury Playhouse theatre. He is also a non-executive director of Investor in Customers – a small company that provides diagnostic analysis of customer relationships.
